The normally open 3/2 solenoid valve (most common) has 2 ports on one side and 1 port on the other. The ports are labelled 1, 2 and 3. Air always goes through port 1, and into port 2 to close the Pinch Valve, with the ports remaining open. The air then goes back through port 2 and out of port 3 where it exhausts to open the Pinch Valve.
The solenoid valve is controlled by electrics. When the solenoid is normally open, the air is supplied and will go through port 1 to port 2 to close the Pinch Valve. The controller then presses a switch, which changes the solenoid so that air can no longer go through port 1 to port 2. This means that the constant air supply is lost, allowing the air to escape from port 2 to port 3 into the atmosphere, leaving the Pinch Valve open.
